Obtain the free Adobe Acrobat Reader which allows you to view, navigate, and print files with the .pdf (Portable Document Format) extension. The software is available from Adobe.

Download the Adobe Acrobat Reader

  • Type www.adobe.com/acrobat/readstep.html in your browser's location box or click here.
  • At the Adobe site, choose software to download based on your computer's operating system and your preferred language.
  • Click the Download button to go to the page where you actually download the software.
  • Write down the name of the file you are downloading.
  • Click on the Download link on this page. In the Save As box that opens, choose a drive and directory to save to. *The Save As dialog box is asking where you would like to put the file on your computer. It's a good idea to download from the Internet into the same directory every time so that you will be able to find your downloaded files. The C:\WINDOWS\TEMP directory is commonly used for downloading (in Windows 95) and C:\TEMP (in Windows 3.1); you may prefer to create a directory on your computer called DOWNLOAD.
  • Click Save to start downloading the file. This may take from a few minutes to a half an hour depending on your Internet connection.

Install the Adobe Acrobat Reader

  • Quit your Web browser.
  • Double-click your downloaded file in Explorer (Win95) or File Manager (Win 3.1).
  • Follow the instructions on your screen. The program will install itself. You may delete the originally downloaded file from your TEMP or DOWNLOAD directory.

The next time you encounter a .pdf file on the Internet the Adobe Acrobat Reader will load in the Browser window automatically and display the .pdf file. You will be able to view, print, zoom in and out and navigate through the .pdf document.
